Belarus' Defense Ministry may increase the number of servicemen in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), Dmitry Poverenny, the acting head of the Defense Ministry's international military cooperation department, said during the national roundtable "Belarus-UN: 70 years Together". The event was held at the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, BelTA has learned.
"We hope to increase our participation if the donor countries that form the mission and allocate quotas allow us. Then we will be able to speak about full participation of Belarus in this mission," said Dmitri Poverenny.
Today, the UNIFL comprises 15,000 military and civilian personnel.
Members of the Armed Forces of Belarus have been performing the peacekeeping functions in the UN Interim Force in Lebanon since August 2010. The level of their training and the quality of task execution are highly praised by the leadership of the mission. A surgeon was the first representative to be sent to the peacekeeping mission in Lebanon. Later a full surgical team consisting of four doctors was formed.
Currently the Interim Force in Naqoura includes five members of the Armed Forces of Belarus. Five rotation rounds have been made since August 2010. In addition, a peacekeeping company was formed at the 103rd independent guards mobile brigade for the participation in peacekeeping operations. This is an elite unit of the Belarusian army consisting exclusively of officers and soldiers serving under contract.
